Business Challenge:

Amway China’s JD Edwards application was running into complications with large, and rapidly growing, data volumes leading to significant performance degradation. A lot of the data residing in the production database was not relevant to the day-to-day functioning of Amway China’s JD Edwards system. Retaining this inactive data in the production environment was slowing down application performance and complicating database backup and routine maintenance. Therefore, Amway China needed a solution to address the following challenges:

  • Reduce the size of the production database to allow database maintenance activities to fit within daily windows.
  • Control JD Edwards application data growth while continuing to meet legal and audit compliance requirements.
  • Meet performance Service Level Agreements (SLAs) to achieve the timely completion of key business processes for mission-critical applications.

The Estuate Solution:

Estuate delivered a solution to extract and archive rarely-used historical JD Edwards data from production environments and store that data in secure, compressed archive files or an archive database. The solution:

  • Archived data out of the production database and moved it into an archive repository.
  • Enabled a unified view of data across live transactional data and archived historical data.
  • Purged data from production to reduce database size.
  • Made archived data easy to access with standard reporting tools.
  • Supported audit and discovery requests with application independent access to archives.

Business Impact:

Estuate’s solution helped Amway China improve application performance and reduce storage costs while addressing information lifecycle management (ILM) and compliance requirements for the data associated with these applications. Key benefits include:

  • Minimized database maintenance time, reduced the downtime for application upgrades and shortened, batch process windows to improve application and database availability.
  • Deferred capacity upgrades and the associated expensive hardware and software license fees.
  • Lowered storage costs without impacting the ability access archived data on demand.
  • Decreased disaster recovery time by keeping only business-critical data in production databases.
  • Maintained acceptable application performance levels with fasterd production database searches and improved response time.
  • Supported data retention regulations and archive, manage, retain and dispose of application data according to business policies.

At Amway China, data growth had become a critical bottleneck that took up time and resources and adversely impacted the productivity of our team. Estuate’s solution tamed data growth, ensured high application availability, improved application performance and significantly reduced operational costs. Estuate’s expertise in information lifecycle governance is the reason we were able to cut the runtime of key processes and boosted application performance by 60 percent
