Estuate Saves Lives by Protecting Critical FDNY Data

Background:

The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY), the largest in the world has the responsibility of protecting the citizens and property of New York City's five boroughs from fires and fire hazards, providing emergency medical services, technical rescue as well as providing first response to biological, chemical and radioactive hazards. 

FDNY wanted an in-house Disaster Recovery (DR) capability, ensuring no loss of data should the production database fail. 

The Challenge:

Estuate was commissioned to devise a solution that would:

  • Ensure no loss of data or performance due to corruptions, system failures, storage failures, site failures, or any other unforeseen event.
  • Ensure 24/7 availability and data protection in case of any planned or an unplanned outage.
  • Provide a well-designed and controlled process that can operate without trained staff or excessive monitoring.

The Estuate Solution:

Estuate recommended implementing Oracle Data Guard on Oracle 10g and 11g database due to its higher availability and data protection feature. We created a parallel server that synchronized with the primary server. Estuate used the Oracle Data Guard’s Fast start failover feature that plays a major role in Oracle’s “maximum availability architecture” and provides Automatic role transition i.e. automatic failover to the standby database if the primary database is not available for any unforeseen reason requiring no intervention by the DBA. 

This auto transmission took less than 45 seconds to take over. We implemented the complete process right from planning, designing, preparing hardware for installation to configuring and from patch of 11gR1 Database software (Oracle Home) to latest patch in record time.

  • Improved Performance of Production Database - The end user has access to the database at any given point of time. When the primary server goes down for any reason, the failover switch takes over and the secondary database becomes primary.
  • Improved Throughput - Operation has been made simple as no more traditional replication needed. As both primary and secondary database are in sync there is no data loss.
  • Centralized monitoring and real-time reporting - Grid control makes it possible to access the entire database from one place. This makes it possible for DBA to track and fix the problem and once the problem is fixed, data synchronizes in a few minutes. This database can be switched to become primary once more.
  • Reduced cost - Provided disaster protection and high availability that could serve as a QA system.
  • Maximum return on investment – All standby databases can be utilized for productive purposes while in standby role.
