Industry       :  Aerospace

Practice Area  :  Information Lifecycle Governance & Security

The client is one of the largest aerospace companies in the world, and a leading manufacturer of commercial jetliners and defense, space and security systems. A top U.S. exporter, the company supports airlines and U.S. and allied government customers in 150 countries. The client’s products and tailored services include commercial and military aircraft, satellites, weapons, electronic and defense systems, launch systems, advanced information and communication systems, and performance-based logistics and training.

Business Challenge:

Over the past decade, increased risks in handling sensitive customer data, and looming security threats from hackers outpaced the client’s ability to keep up with the stringent regulatory requirements. At the same time, it needed to develop repeatable processes to mask data so that it could reduce the overall cost of software development.  The company was also subject to stringent information security guidelines and privacy laws.  To meet these challenges, the client needed a comprehensive Data Masking solution.

Rather than implement one-off solutions, the client decided to setup a data masking Center of Excellence (CoE), or factory, that would establish company-wide processes and best practices and provide data masking as a service to any internal customer. It decided to standardize on the IBM InfoSphere Optim Data Privacy Solution, but needed expert advice on product installation, configuration, architecture and operations.

The Estuate Solution:

Estuate faced several technical and operational challenges in the implementation of this complex Data Masking solution. The main challenges to overcome were the strict and highly defined security policies, and a highly segmented and fenced network infrastructure. The client had little experience with a data masking factory and was heavily dependent on Estuate’s expertise in IBM Optim solutions and Information Lifecycle Governance & Security (ILGS) domain expertise.

The solution delivered three completed IBM InfoSphere Optim Data Masking pilots, as well as:

  • Assistance in creation of a CoE, including defining the organization, mission, roles, intake process, corporate masking policies, repeatable processes and best practices.
  • Assistance in defining IBM Optim architecture and infrastructure, including defining the overall Optim architecture across the client’s data centers, providing sizing guidance for the Optim environments and installing and configuring Optim.
  • Execution of individual application projects (on the job training for CoE team members), including design, mask, test and deploy applications and the integration of test project.
  • Assistance in ongoing application masking.
  • Assistance in setting up, managing and scaling Optim infrastructure.

Business Impact:

The tangible benefits included better data security compliance, potentially resulting in more successful internal and external audits. The quantifiable benefits include:

  • Supported internal customers with their data masking needs by setting up Data Masking Center of Excellence as a Common Service.
  • Helped leverage the Data Masking platform as a service for software development activities, which will potentially result in lower overall development costs.
  • Lowered development costs by leveraging the Data Masking platform as a service to internal customers for their software development activities.
  • Reduced the risk exposure by preserving client data confidentiality.
  • Supported privacy regulations and corporate governance standards across nonproduction internal environments.

We needed to establish Center of Excellence (CoE) for data privacy to enforce best practices of IT architecture, user experience, security policies and standards across the enterprise. This process had never been attempted before. Using a vendor with experience like Estuate helped us overcome these factors before they became obstacles.
