Background:

State Farm is a mutual insurance company, with 68,000 employees and more than 18,000 agents servicing 81 million policies and accounts throughout the U.S. and Canada.

After growing the company through mergers and acquisitions, State Farm found itself with many large, growing databases, a shortage of storage space, uncontrolled sensitive data, and application performance degradation in its test and development environments. It launched an initiative to reduce cost and improve performance of these databases. After an extensive and rigorous evaluation process, IBM teamed with Estuate to set up a dedicated development team for State farm in State Farm’s Bloomington Indiana data center.

The Opportunity:

  • Reducing the size of test and development data saves space and money, but properly securing data from theft can save the business. State Farm also recognized its vulnerability to data theft from those same environments, exposing its clients.
  • Estuate’s rich experience in using IBM Optim on different platforms—including not only distributed environments such as Linux, UNIX, and Windows, but also IBM mainframes and iSeries systems.
  • Estuate’s long experience and proven track record with IBM’s Optim implementations streamlined State Farm’s desig, build and implementation of its own in-house test data management process in parallel with the data masking project.
  • Implement an innovative technical solution approach--“Data Life approach”
  • Lock down all applications, mask sensitive tables, records, and data across all systems at once; and then start all systems back up again

The Estuate Solution:

  • With Optim Test Data Management (TDM) configuration rules, Estuate developed data-extract criteria creating a representative data sub-set to be delivered consistently to State Farm’s test and development environments
  • Intelligent sub-setting permits testers and developers to work from a realistic representation of production data, reducing the size of test databases by as much as 90%
  • Rich rule-based Data Privacy (DP) configuration capacity, coupled with other customizable features like integration with masking control tables, enabled Estuate to create a masking regimen to protect State Farm’s test and development data from potential internal security threats.

Business Impact:

With TDM in place, State Farm greatly reduced its storage requirements for test and development environments. Overall, the Estuate implementation for State Farm achieved the following goals:

  • Secured State Farm from the most common source of enterprise data breaches.
  • Protected State Farm’s customers’ personal information, such as credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, names, and addresses.
  • Minimized the potential for multimillion-dollar consequences of data breaches.
  • Reduced the size of test databases, saving money, reducing back-up time, and improving performance of test and development systems.
  • Minimized the need to purchase new hardware for testing and QA.
  • Reduced time-to-market for new products by streamlining testing.
